How I Met Tyson: The Cat Who Changed My Life

If you saw my kitten post today, you might be wondering why I have such a soft spot for mischievous little furballs.

The truth is, it all started with one very unexpected knock on my door.

Many years ago, I had just moved into my very first apartment in Toronto. It was my first night there. The boxes were everywhere, I didn’t know a soul in the building, and everything felt unfamiliar.

Then… knock, knock.

When I opened the door, there were two young boys who exclaimed they’d found kittens and did I want one! I didn’t even know if pets were allowed in the building, but I couldn’t resist and asked where they were.  Downstairs in the multi purpose room they said.

I grabbed my key and went straight downstairs.  There chasing a ribbon was the most beautiful tabby-and-white kitten I’d ever seen.He looked up at me as if to say, “Well… aren’t you going to take me home ?”

I scooped him up and brought him into my new apartment and he couldn’t have been happier – cardboard boxes everywhere for him to explore.

Tyson wasn’t just a cat—he was a character.

He was funny, endlessly curious, a little bit naughty, incredibly affectionate, and completely fearless. He had a way of making every ordinary day feel like an adventure.

He followed me everywhere. Friends used to joke that he was more like a dog than a cat because wherever I went, Tyson wanted to come too. Whether I was going to the shops, relaxing outside, or simply moving from room to room, he was always right there beside me.

He made people smile without even trying. One of the funny things he did was sniff visitors shoes – he would stick his whole head in there and I swear he determined if he was going to like someone from the smell of their shoes!

Over the years, Tyson became so much more than a beloved pet. He became my companion through life’s highs and lows, my daily source of laughter, and one of the greatest gifts I’ve ever received.

Eventually, I realized something.

The funny little stories I was constantly telling about Tyson weren’t just memories—they were adventures waiting to be shared.

That’s how Tyson in Whiskerville was born.

Every book is inspired by the playful spirit, curiosity, kindness, and larger-than-life personality of the real Tyson. While the world the stories exist in is fictional, the heart of each one comes from a very real cat’s mischief - who came into my life because of a simple knock on the door.

Looking back now, it’s amazing how one unexpected visitor on my first night in a new apartment changed the course of my life.

Who would have thought that one friendly neighbourhood cat would someday inspire an entire children’s book series?

Sometimes the smallest paws leave the biggest footprints on our hearts.

I’d love to hear your story. Has a pet ever changed your life in an unexpected way? Share it in the comments—I read every one.
